NSW Labor promises to create ‘great koala national park’ if it wins power

The New South Wales Labor party will establish a new national park stretching from Kempsey to Coffs Harbour in a bid to save the state’s endangered koala population.

On Thursday 19 January 2023 the opposition leader, Chris Minns, will announce that the party will re-commit to establishing the “great koala national park” on the NSW north coast, which could see an area of about 300,000 hectares of key habitat for the native species protected from logging.

NSW Government Secret Document

A 2021 Natural Resources Commission report not released by state government called for the suspension of timber harvesting in three ‘extreme risk’ zones

In an exclusive report from the Guardian, November 25th, 2021, it is revealed the New South Wales government has kept secret a document calling for a halt to native logging in regions hit hard by the 2019 black summer bushfires. The report further recommends the revision of agreements with Firestry Corp to account for the increasing threat of global heating .

The report additionally called for the suspension of timber harvesting for a minimum of three years in three zones it deemed to be “extreme risk”, whilst identifying 17 other zones, including Coffs Harbour, for which a review of current harvesting practices should be undertaken.

The Fight for Climate Justice

On November 23, NSW Courts jailed a 22 year old non-violent climate activist for one year for disrupting coal trains entering the port of Newcastle. The Sentencing Magistrate was Janine Lacy, wife of NSW One Nation Leader Mark Latham.

The jailing of young non-violent protestors sets a dangerous precedent for both our so called democracy and for the fight for a safe and livable planet. We must publicly demonstrate our outrage at this politicalised pushback by the government.

It was only last week at COP 26 that Australia sought to defend the mining and burning of coal for decades to come, at the expense of our biosphere, our biodiversity and the future for our youth. Sergio has only ever been arrested for non-violent protests. He has not destroyed property nor harmed anyone or anything. He took this action not just for himself, but for all life on earth.

He now sits in prison with a hard and long journey ahead of him. The way to thank and honor his commitments is to show up in solidarity and demand the Government Act on the climate crisis and stop persecuting those who are trying to avert a climate catastrophe.
