GREAT KOALA NATIONAL PARK announced!
As most of you have probably heard, the GKNP has been announced by Chris Minns and Penny Sharpe.
What this announcement means for the proposed Pine Creek Forest Bridge?
As many of you know PCSF is home to significant and healthy koala populations and connects the intergenerationally significant populations of Bongil Bongil and Bindarri National Parks. To date the proposed GNKP boundaries include most native forest in PCSF, however there are still native plantation blocks in Pine Creek SF and Tuckers Nob SF vital to connectivity of resident koala populations not included in the GKNP footprint.
Whilst officially ‘plantation’ compartments, some of these forests have not been logged for over 50 years and today exist as rich and diverse native forests including mature koala feed trees and supporting a wide variety of wildlife.
Surveys have shown the importance of established habitat, to koalas and other threatened species, in compartments still ear-marked for logging , in particular Compartment 15-18 in PCSF.
Friends of Pine Creek will continue to advocate for the establishment of the Forest Bridge in it’s entirety, to protect the future health of our local koala populations.
