On November 23, NSW Courts jailed a 22 year old non-violent climate activist for one year for disrupting coal trains entering the port of Newcastle. The Sentencing Magistrate was Janine Lacy, wife of NSW One Nation Leader Mark Latham.
The jailing of young non-violent protestors sets a dangerous precedent for both our so called democracy and for the fight for a safe and livable planet. We must publicly demonstrate our outrage at this politicalised pushback by the government.
It was only last week at COP 26 that Australia sought to defend the mining and burning of coal for decades to come, at the expense of our biosphere, our biodiversity and the future for our youth. Sergio has only ever been arrested for non-violent protests. He has not destroyed property nor harmed anyone or anything. He took this action not just for himself, but for all life on earth.
He now sits in prison with a hard and long journey ahead of him. The way to thank and honor his commitments is to show up in solidarity and demand the Government Act on the climate crisis and stop persecuting those who are trying to avert a climate catastrophe.
